What's New at Fiske
Congratulations, CU graduates!
Public Shows on Hiatus:
Fiske Planetarium is OPEN for visitors, private reservations and K-12 school groups throughout May (Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm. Fiske is closed on Saturdays and Sundays (except for private rentals) and will be closed on Monday, May 26, for Memorial Day). "Colorado Skies" live talks, Friday night live talks and starshows, Friday night laser shows are on hiatus for the remainder of May but will return on Thursday, June 5. Saturday afternoon shows are on hiatus until mid-August. Daytime family shows every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday at 10:00am & 1:00pm begin on June 3!
Sommers-Bausch Observatory will re-open for Friday night Public Open Houses at 9:00pm Friday, June 6.
Nikon Small World Exhibit:
On view through May 16: Enjoy the Nikon Small World art exhibit at Fiske! Admission is free. Marvel at the winning pieces of the 2007 competition, all images taken under the microscope during the course of scientific research. CU faculty involved are: John Hart who served as a competition judge and Mike Klymkowsky whose stunning image of frog embryos won 7th Place! Fiske's lobby is FREE and open to the public! Experience Science on a Sphere and our hands-on exhibits. Visitors are welcome M-F 9:00am-4:00pm during Maymester.
Fiske-LFU Astronomy Camp:
Fiske staff are pleased to partner with Longmont Free University and the Magellan Center to offer Astronomy Camp for kids ages 4-8 this June! For more info and to register your student, please contact LFU at 303-702-1500.
In the sky this week:
For locally-obtained images and narration, please link to video. Thanks to Vern Raben (Longmont Astronomical Society), here's what we can see over the next few days:
- After 9:00pm, look west for Mars in constellation Gemini and Mercury in constellation Taurus; with a telescope, you can also see dwarf planet Ceres in Taurus. Look south for Saturn in constellation Leo.
- In the early morning, look southeast for Jupiter in constellation Sagittarius. Before 4:00am, look for comets and dark sky objects like galaxy M51.
- For other events in May or help locating anything in the sky (such as satellites overhead), visit your local astronomical society and NASA's Amateur Astronomy webpage.
