Description

Enjoy FREE festivities for all ages at Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory (SBO) as we celebrate space science achievements and unveil new interactive exhibits! Giveaways, prizes, food and family fun are just part of the excitement -- Get your hands on our telescopes and see for yourself what astronomy is all about!

At Fiske:

  • Doors open at noon! Activities in theater and lobby; Exhibitor booths active in hallway. Food available outside. Prize drawings every 30 minutes.
  • Rocket launches led by Science Discovery & Fiske staff -- get your own balloon rocket kit! Weather permitting, meet at Sun obelisk in front of Fiske. Times: 12:00pm, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 4:00pm.
  • Live star talks by Dr. John Weiss -- See the night sky and maybe some lovely images of Saturn! Times: 12:10pm, 1:10pm, 2:10pm, 3:10pm.
  • 3-D Cosmos -- Join Dr. John Hart for an amazing tour of Hubble Space Telescope images of nebulae and galaxies in 3-D, set to music, in Fiske's classroom. Times: 12:30pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:30pm.
  • Mike Moore -- Reading from and signing his new book, "Twilight War", Mike Moore discusses the history of human spaceflight and current concerns regarding weaponization of space. Brought to you by the Secure World Foundation. Time: 4:00pm.
  • "October Sky" -- See the movie based on Homer Hickam's memoir, "Rocket Boys", featured book for "One Book, One Boulder County". Introduction by Mike Moore. Brought to you by CU Community Relations. Time: 5:00pm.
  • Meet real-life rocketeer Art Hoag and see how he built his own rocket at age 18! Time: 7:00pm.
  • mindSpiral -- Live space music concert with special effects and lasers! Brought to you by CU-SEDS and Secure World Foundation. Times: 7:30pm, 8:15pm.
  • Telescope Giveaway Drawing -- Time: 8:00pm.

Summer Hours of Operation

Main Office / Tickets: M-F, 9:00am-4:00pm 303-492-5002. You may purchase tickets in advance by phone (Visa or Mastercard only) or in person up to 15 minutes before scheduled public showtimes.

Parking

Metered parking is $1.25/hour 7:30am-5:00pm, seven days a week. Please park in metered spots along Regent Drive or in Lot 306 (on Regent near Broadway; talking cashbox provides receipts). All-day parking permits for Lot 308 (Regent & Kittredge Loop Drive) are available at Fiske for $5.75 each. After 5:00pm M-F & all-day Sat-Sun, parking in Lot 308 is FREE! Disabled patrons may be dropped off in the red curb (loading zone) area along Regent Drive.
